Crowdfunding Vs. Group-Funding

Crowdfunding Vs. Group-Funding

One of the questions that always crops up when we are talking to people about Shareagift is what is the difference between group-funding (what we do) and crowdfunding? In some ways they are quite similar and in others they are very different. In order to answer this question we need to look at the key features of both, let’s start with crowdfunding.

Crowdfunding…

..is where a number of unrelated people back or invest in a project.

..has a limited deadline, which is usually thirty days.

..is usually restricted to specific rules where certain campaigns are not allowed.

..cannot be used by private individuals or charities.

..usually has a rule where if the goal is not reached the raised cash is refunded.

..can be difficult, as when you create a campaign you usually need to provide detailed and accurate information about what you are raising money for.

..can take a long time to set up.

Group-Funding (Social Gifting)…

..is where groups can fundraise for anything and everything.

..is specifically designed for private groups, clubs, communities, families, and charities.

..can have no deadline.

..can be made public or can be kept private as an invite only campaign.

..is ideal for group gifts, personal projects, community projects, emergency funds, medical treatments and charitable causes.

communities

..can be used to raise funds for any type of campaign but is not suited for financing products or start-ups.

..is quick and easy to set up, customise and activate.

Shareagift featured in the Huffington Post

Exciting week last week for Shareagift as we were featured on the pioneering online news website, The Huffington Post.

We met the lovely Laxmi Hariharan at the Silicon Drinkabout event a few Fridays ago and introduced her to Shareagift. She liked the site so much she included us in her series on startups, and we were absolutely delighted. So thanks to 3beards for kindly hosting us for the event, and thank you Laxmi for your interest and support 🙂

Friends already using Shareagift for Christmas!

I know, I know, it’s not even Halloween yet, but we’re already excited as we’re just starting to see the first few Shareagift Pages created by some of you super-organised peeps planning ahead for Christmas!

Company Shareagift Pages for Christmas

The Actors Touring Company have already started a Shareagift Page for their company Christmas Stocking! They need to buy an expensive piece of filming equipment so they can filem their tours in 2013 and decided Shareagift would be the perfect way to do it. Good luck guys, we hope you get all the funds you need :).

Friends & Family Sharegift Pages for Christmas

The lovely Tara, just created her Shareagift Page for a brand new Macbook Pro laptop computer from her family as a way for her family and friends to afford the gift she really wants – and she’s already collected $200 towards it!

School & Teachers Shareagift Pages for Christmas

Last year we had an amazing response from people setting up Shareagift Pages to collect from parents towards class gifts for teachers. The most popular items we noticed were gift vouchers – for major stores or spas, so the teachers could choose for themselves. We haven’t seen any pop up for this Christmas yet, but we’re keeping an eye out 😉

The beauty about Shareagift is that you can use it collect money for absolutely anything – from that perfect gift, to charity fundraising, to sharing the cost of a group trip – so what are we waiting for – Christmas is only 61 days away!
