Top 5 Most Terrifying Places On Earth!

Today Lonely Planet named Kent as Europe’s top spot for a family holiday. The county brings in thousands of tourists due to its many attractions, which include the White Cliffs of Dover, Canterbury Cathedral, Lees Castle (billed as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’) and Margate sea front. Kent also plays host to the most haunted village in England!

Pluckley Village draws in visitors from far and wide as well as paranormal investigators and various television crews. The village and surrounding area is rumoured to have around 12 to 16 ghosts haunting it. The most popular ghost is the screaming man who is believed to have worked in the village brickwork and was unfortunate to fall to his death. Here at Shareagift we love being spooked and have compiled a list of five of the scariest places to visit around the world!

1- The Door To Hell

The Door to Hell is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan. Soviet engineers lit this natural gas fire in 1971 and it still burns to this day. The natural gas deposits in the area fuel the fire and the smell of burning sulphur fills the area. It was originally thought to be an oil field site but as the Soviets started drilling the ground beneath collapsed into a wide crater.

2 – Lake Natron

Lake Natron is located in East Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania and got its name from the mixture of salt and minerals, called natron, which are revealed when the water’s level decreases. The lake’s water can reach temperatures of up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and is salty enough to poison most animals. Many of the animals that do visit the lake are turned into statues, through calcification resulting in scary looking figures in and around the area.

3- Leap Castle

Leap castle is situated in Ireland and is widely recognised as the most haunted castle in the world. Numerous people were imprisoned and executed in the castle, which is one of the reasons that people believe it is haunted. Shadows are often seen wandering the Priest’s House within the castle grounds, the Murder Hole Room contains a blood stained floor, ghost sightings of two young girls have been reported by many visitors, and the infamous Red Lady has also been seen by many carrying a dagger in her hand and raising it in a menacing manner!

4 – La Isla De La Munecas – Island Of The Dolls

The Island of the Dolls sits south of Mexico City and has become a world-renowned tourist destination. This island is the home of hundreds of terrifying, mutilated dolls! The island’s only inhabitant, Don Julian Santana, found the body of a drowned child in the canal some 50 years ago. Haunted by her death he started hanging dolls around the island hoping this would appease her tortured soul and protect the island from future evil.

5 – Paris Catacombs

These catacombs are located underground in Paris, France just south of the former city gate. They hold the remains of around six million people and it is said to be the world’s largest grave. It is now one of Paris’s most visited tourist attractions and was the location of last year’s horror film ‘As Above, So Below’.
