Helping Shaun After His Business Burnt Down

We are an inquisitive bunch here at Shareagift and we love discovering what people use Shareagift for. This week we caught up with Sammi who is using Shareagift to collect money online for her Dads workshop that was burnt down in the early hours of the 5th of August. This workshop was his livelihood, his job and his hobby, amongst other things the fire destroyed all his cars and tools. With help from friends and family they have managed to clear the debris and are now hoping to raise enough money to help her Dad start over.

Shaun and his garrage

Here’s what Sammi had to say about her campaign and her experience using Shareagift.

Why did you chose Shareagift?

I chose Shareagift because it sounded the best out of all the fundraising sites I looked at.

How helpful has this page been in collecting money together?

The page has been amazing, I can share it around on my Facebook and I can email the link for others to share, its really good!

How much of an impact will this money have on your Dad?

This will help my dad so much! After all, he has lost everything so he needs to find a new workshop to start his business again. Even if it’s enough for his first months rent it’s amazing how much people are pulling together, I’m so thankful for them all!

What sorts of people have contributed to your page?

It has mostly been friends and friends of friends.

If you were to set up a new Shareagift page what and who would it be for?

If I was to set up another in the future it would probably be for a charity of some sort, or maybe even a fund for our honeymoon, that would be great!

Dave’s Friends Send Him Off To Frankfurt In Style

We are an inquisitive bunch here at Shareagift and we love discovering what people use Shareagift for. This week we caught up with Joanna, a great Shareagifter, who used Shareagift to collect money online with friends and family for a leaving gift for her friend Dave who is moving all the way to Frankfurt, Germany.

Joanna set an exaggerated goal of £1000 for her page and managed to raise 105% of her target in just 9 days! This has gone towards a brand new keyboard for Dave to take to Germany with him. After such a successful campaign here’s what Joanna had to say about her Shareagift experience.

What gave you the idea to create a page and start collecting money for your friend?

As our friend, Dave, is moving to Frankfurt, Germany we decided that we’d love to get him a big and special present from all those close to him.

Why did you choose Shareagift?

My thought process went something like this: “I wish there was a way to create a donations page, like how you would give to a sponsored run, but for a group present” and then I found Shareagift.

How helpful has this page been in collecting money together?

The page has been crucial in collecting the money. It has made such a difference for people to see what they are giving to and the progress of our target – I am sure that we wouldn’t have raised half as much without this page.

With the help of Shareagift have you managed to achieve what you set out to do?

We raised four times more than we anticipated with Shareagift!

What sorts of people have contributed to your page?

Friends and family.

If you were to set up a new Shareagift page what and who would it be for?

I would be keen to use Shareagift again for a leaving present or to help celebrate a big birthday for a friend or family member.

Unusual University Clubs

The university experience is largely about finding yourself as an individual, but the bustling campuses of colleges are also the best locations to join a selection of weird and wonderful groups. In such groups, members are united in a common goal by particularly mundane or strikingly unusual pursuits. We’ve picked our five top unusual university groups and societies so you don’t have to witness the horror of typing “weird groups” into Google.

Students Against Hippies In Trees, U.C Berkeley

Uni1

The thing about those hippies is that they are always up trees. One of the more unnecessarily political active university groups, this club is unsettlingly passionate about supporting the university’s decision to cut down trees on the campus. The aforementioned ‘hippies’ object to the felling. The group have even stepped up their operations from battling tree-hugging hippies to taking on those hippies sitting pretty at the top of those battle-scarred trees.

Hummus Society, University of Warwick and London School of Economics

Do you need a tasting evening university experience with over forty different types of hummus to go with a top degree classification? Then these two groups might be the best places for you. Yes, there are two of these groups in British universities. And my football club can’t even get another people together to make a team most Monday nights…

Anarchist Society, University of Edinburgh

Uni 2

First rule of Anarchist Club? Question why we have created an organisation. University anarchist groups might be expected to be vigorously active, but this society mostly devotes itself to consuming radical literature together.

Humans v Zombies, University of Florida

Uni3

Humans v Zombies is a society that has been set up in order to enable its members to experience a simulated zombie apocalypse. It is essentially a giant game of tag with a backdrop of students and campus buildings, where participants are split into humans and zombies. Humans can protect themselves from the zombie hoard with nerf guns and socks (everyone’s weapons of choice). Crucially, this society has confirmed that they will defend the campus if an actual zombie apocalypse breaks out!

Assassins Society, Durham University

In this group you are assigned a target and you have to ‘kill’ them without being noticed. In fact, the club bio proudly declares that “membership requires skill, cunning and alertness. Some members turn into cool, calm, collected and ruthlessly efficient killing machines, whereas others become jibbering wrecks, torn apart by paranoia, lying awake at night huddled close to their excessive arsenal of destructive weaponry”.

Kaye’s Friends Raise Cash to Send Her to Bali and Sydney

At Shareagift we have a wonderful time discovering all the causes and experiences that our users raise cash for. One brilliant example is Kaye. In celebration of Kaye’s 50th birthday this year (happy birthday!), her sister-in-law, Jacky, created a Shareagift page in order to collect funds to enable Kaye to fulfill her dream of visiting a spa retreat in Bali and travelling to beautiful Sydney. What a birthday gift!

Kaye 1

Jacky and Kaye’s friends originally intended to raise sufficient cash to fund her hotel and spa in Bali. However, in less than two weeks, Kaye’s friends raised over £1,200, which was more than double the original target!

Not only that, but Jacky also referred to Shareagift as a “virtual piggybank” – and we think that this term is a pretty cool way of describing what the website does.

kaye 2

All that is left is for Kaye to revel in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, relax in an idyllic spa and take in the breathtaking scenery of Bali before jetting off to Sydney to immerse herself in the bright lights of the city. Sounds all right to me.

We, at Shareagift, hope that you have an incredible time Kaye!

If you dream of far-off shores, don’t leave it at just that – dreams. Collect funds with Shareagift and you too can breathe in the sites and sounds of the tropics!

Nick’s friends buy him SXSW ticket with Shareagift!

“Nick Such is one of the nicest guys you’ve ever met”.

These are the touching words of Nick’s best buddy, Brian. Nick it seems, is one of those guys who’s always just doing something nice for his friends – the veritable unsung hero. So Brian decided to get all his friends together and use Shareagift to give Nick something he’d really love. Not for his birthday, not for Christmas – just for being an awesome guy.

This year Nick was planning to go to the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, but didn’t have the budget for the pass. When Brian found out that Elon Musk, Nick’s life-long hero, was keynoting the event, he knew he had to find a way to get Nick there.  So he created a Shareagift Page and got all Nick’s friends together in secret to collect the funds so he could go.

(For those of you who may not know what I’m on about, SXSW is an awesome music/film/interactive festival held each year in Austin, Texas. It. Is. Very. Cool.)

In just 10 days fourteen of Nick’s friends had chipped in and reached their $995 target to buy his pass. They gave it to him together last week and he was absolutely thrilled, posting to Twitter to say, “Every once in a while I’m reminded that my friends and family are awesome! Actually I’m reminded of this everyday. #Thank you”.

Brian gave us some ace feedback saying, “The platform worked great.  It was easy to setup and share with friends.  It’s a great concept and allows you to give larger gifts by sharing the burden with a group”.

And Nick very sweetly wished us all the best with Shareagift, saying “It’s already changing my life!” (Nick – we might be slightly in love with you ;))

We hope you have a brilliant time at the festival (for which read: We’re all horribly jealous and want to come with you). Brian, you and your friends are the real heroes of the story for us – now we just have to find ourselves an equally awesome bunch to send us there as well!

(Font) Awesome use of Shareagift

Excuse the pun, but this is awesome.

At Shareagift we’re consistently intrigued and amazed by the innovative and original ways people use our group funding service, but this is one we’re especially proud of. Dave Gandy, founder of Font Awesome, chose to integrate Shareagift into his own site as a way for users to thank him for this work – by contributing towards his Gift Page for a shiny new iMac.

For those of you who don’t know about Font Awesome, it’s a very cool web font icon set, used and loved by designers and developers worldwide. In fact, according to GitHub (a leading repository for open source projects), Font Awesome was the most popular new open source project in the WORLD for 2012.

Dave created Font Awesome to be absolutely free – putting in hundreds of hours towards the project as something to give back to the open source community. And, having looked at all the group gift giving sites available, he chose Shareagift as the best mechanism to help his followers give something back to him.

Check out the Contribute section on Dave’s site to see how he’s using Shareagift – and check out his project in general, as it is really cool and we’d like to help spread the word about it.

Thanks for using our site Dave, you rock.  Hope Font Awesome goes on to be discovered to the delight of millions of designers and developers around the world – and that you get that sparkling new iMac very soon 😉

How to Crowd Fund your Party with Shareagift

This is one of my favourite user stories of 2012.

Back in September of last year, the delightful Gráinne (who I have had the pleasure of speaking to many times) decided she wanted to to organise a once in a lifetime surprise party for her husband, Andreas’, 50th birthday. Happily for us, she came across Shareagift online and used our site to crowd-fund the party, inviting his friends and family to contribute to one really special evening.

Gráinne collected over €800 to her Shareagift Page, so she could organise a private ‘party bus‘ to take her, Andreas and 30 of their friends around the city. Collecting funds from friends around the world over several months, Gráinne kept the whole thing a secret from Andreas, so it was a total surprise when he arrived to find his name lit up in lights on the bus and all his friends there ready to celebrate with him.

Gráinne surprises Andreas on the big day!

I gather it was a beautifully raucous affair! Complete with champagne and dancing and general merriment – in that wonderfully Irish tradition – followed by a spoiling dinner at one of their favourite Irish pub afterwards. Gráinne even sent us an amazing video of the party bus afterwards so we could get a flavour of the evening – it looked like epic fun indeed, and no doubt a sore head or two the following day 😉

The Party Bus makes its way around Paris!

We were all horribly jealous in the office to hear about their amazing adventure, but thrilled to have been able to help along the way. Gráinne, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for your time and your contributions – you gave us some awesome ideas and some invaluable feedback – and we’ve loved being in touch with you.

Thank you to Johannes Berghoff for letting us use his brilliant photos to tell the story, and Gráinne for your kind words to our team after the event:

“Just a short email to say a BIG thank you for a super website, and a super idea. Andreas’s surprise 50th birthday was a huge success, and it was a huge help to me to have found your website and have everyone contribute to what ended up being quite a costly evening. But it was definitely worth it! Many thanks to you, and to your team for all your help, quick responses and solutions!”

And we hope Gráinne’s story will inspire a ton of other people to use Shareagift to crowd fund their parties and give other friends and family the evening of a lifetime.
