Wimbledon 2015 has kicked off with a bang this week, with crowds flocking to the grounds for the first few days of what is expected to be one of the hottest Wimbledon tournaments to date. Londoner’s filled the grounds yesterday hoping for a chance to see Andy Murray play his first match of the tournament and they weren’t left disappointed! In support of the tennis superstar and the hype around this year’s tournament, here are 10 facts that you didn’t know about Wimbledon 2015!

1 – Players will eat around 15,000 bananas this year.

2 – This year over 50,000 plants were supplied to fill the grounds.

3 – The waiting list to become a member now has around 1000 people on it, dating back many years.

4 – 230,000 glasses of Pimms will be served during the tournament.

5 – 142,000 portions of English strawberries will be eaten over the two weeks.

6 – The prize money collected by both the male and female singles Champions will be £1.88 million.

7 – The Wimbledon stringing team will work on approximately 2,000 rackets and 40 miles of racket strings.

8 – Over the fortnight around 54,000 tennis balls will be used.

This week commuters in London were unable to use their local train station as thieves had sealed up the entrance in order to try and steal a cash machine! Luckily one man broke through the barriers opening up the station and scaring the thieves away before they could get into the machine. Luckily he knew that if the station had been due to close commuters would have been warned about it.

1- The single worst accident on the Underground occurred in 1975 at Moorgate killing 42 people.

2- The Victoria line was going to be known as the Viking line.

4- An estimated half a million mice live in the Underground system.

5- The most popular suicide time is around 11am.

6- In September of 1940 a census found that 177,500 people were sleeping in Tube stations across London.

7- An air quality study in 2002 found that 20 minutes on the Northern line has the same effect as smoking a cigarette.

8- The most recent Tube birth was a boy in 2009.

9- Approximately 50 passengers a year kill themselves on the Underground.

10- Every week, Underground escalators travel the equivalent distance of going twice around the world.

11- Sting and Paul McCartney are rumoured to have busked on the Underground in disguise.
