Tomorrow marks the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Considered by many to be a masterpiece of construction, although it is not the tallest, longest or widest bridge in the world it is still one of the most recognisable. The bridge is also known as suicide bridge because it is thought to be the world’s premier venue for suicide. Take a look at our pick of five of the world’s most dangerous places, which include shark infested waters, sand storms and volcanic smog.

Suicide Bridge

On average the golden gate bridge has one person jump to their death every two weeks, and more than 1,500 to date! Many more consider jumping but decide against it. According to the local police force it is rare for a week to pass without a golden gate bridge related incident. John Bateson a former crisis centre director stated ‘ There is a kind of allure to the bridge, for a brief period people receive attention in death that may have been denied in life’.

The African Lake Of Death

Lake Kivu lies on the border between the Deomocratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The water at the bottom of this lake is heavy with dissolved gas. The lake contains an estimated 256 cubic kilometres of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 65 cubic kilometres of methane. If released from the depths, the gasses could spread through the air and wipe out the 2 million Africans who live in the lake’s basin. Lakes in Cameroon with similar gasses have erupted in the past, one killing 37 people and the other wiping out 1700 villagers from the exposure of toxic gas.

Death By Sand

In China, the Minqin County , in northwest Gansu province, is soon to be wiped out by two merging deserts. The Tengger desert approaches from the southeast and the Badian Jaran approaches from the northwest. Trapped between the two this area is slowly being overrun by sand storms and daylong winds. The Chinese government has started relocating residents as this area will soon become a sandy wasteland open to the elements.

Volcano Central

Mount Merapi is located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta. Even during its calmest days smoke floats out of the volcanoes mouth, blackening the sky around it. It has erupted 60 times in the past five centuries with the most recent eruption in 2006. Around 200,000 villagers live within 4 miles of the volcano and many have been killed or severely injured by the hot gas and lava that the volcano spurts out.

Shark Infested Waters

Volusia County, located in the east central part of the U.S state of Florida has more recorded shark attacks than anywhere else on earth! One of the more popular beaches of the region, New Smyrna, fills with surfers each summer and many who hit the waves suffer from shark attacks. Luckily the majority of the shark attacks are not fatal with many just being nips and small bites.
